The judges declined the ban of the novel but gave the school districts the legal duty to take the responsibility of ensuring that this does not create a racially hostile environment (PBS.org). I agree with the judges decision after all this is not the only required reading material that has offensive words. There are many regional writings in the canon of our American literature in similar tone and themes to this novel. Where indeed do we draw the line of which ones are appropriate and acceptable and which are not? We all have different views, experiences, and degrees of acceptance and/or tolerance. The message about race and slavery in this novel is very important. It is central to the story and should be taught in school. I concur with the courts reasoning, the fact that a student is required to read a book does not mean that those students will accept the views presented in such a book. Furthermore, the Court states that it is important for the student to learn and think critically about offensive ideas to be able to develop their critical thinking skills (crin.org). As difficult as it is to read this novel for many people especially the African Americans, we need to take into consideration that Mark Twain intended for this novel to be an authentic representation of the treatment, attitude, and mentality of the Southerners and slaves during that time period. Before slavery was abolished in 1865, with the exception of Louisiana, all Southern states by law can legally own slaves. In 1841, Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York was kidnapped and sold to slavery in the South. After he regained his freedom, he wrote about his experiences and one in particular passage stood out, Freeman [the white slave broker] would make us hold up our heads, walk briskly back and forth, while customers would feel of our heads and arms and bodies, turn us about, ask us what we could do, make us open our mouths and show our teeth Sometimes a man or woman was taken back to the small house in the yard, stripped, and inspected more minutely. Scars upon a slaves back were considered evidence of a rebellious or unruly spirit and hurt his sale (crf-usa.org, 2018). This is just one account among many that slaves were treated as personal property to be bought, used, and sold like an object. For slave masters to refer to their slaves as the word nigger was common and unremarkable. It is no wonder that in the novel Hucks vocabulary was littered with the use of the aforementioned word. Hucks use of the word did not seem abusive, malicious, evil, or offensive when taken into the context of the novel. Mark Twains novel is an account of that time. It is not meant to cause psychological damage or to inflict pain. This is a regional writing that documents the regions time period including dialect and the inferior treatments of the slaves. I would argue that we need this novel to stay in our libraries and schools for the betterment of our society and culture. There are immense values to be gained by reading, learning, discussing, and understanding The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain in our schools in its entirety. Yes, even the use of the word nigger and its stereotypical portraits of blacks as superstitious and unintelligent. There can be no healing without understanding. This work is a glimpsed of our history remarkably captured by Mark Twain. It is a realistic portrayal of the characters during that time. Jim was a slave deprived of human dignity and education, but it did not mean that he was not intelligent. Hucks excessive use of the word nigger was a product of his upbringing and environment. Js Mill John Locke believes that man ought to have more freedom in political society than John Stuart Mill does. John Locke's The Second Treatise of Government and John Stuart Mill's On Liberty are influential and potent literary works which while outlining the conceptual framework of each thinkers ideal state present two divergent visions of the very nature of man and his freedom. John Locke and John Stuart Mill have different views regarding how much freedom man ought to have in political society because they have different views regarding man's basic potential for inherently good or evil behavior, as well as the ends or purpose of political societies. In order to examine how each thinker views man and the freedom he ought to have in political society it is necessary to define freedom or liberty from each philosophers perspective. In The Second Treatise of Government, John Locke states his belief that all men exist in a state of perfect freedom to order their actions and dispose of their possessions and person as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature, without asking leave or depending upon the will of any other man. (Locke 4) Locke believes that man exists in a state of nature and thus exists in a state of uncontrollable liberty which has only the law of nature to restrict it, which is reason. (Locke 5) However Locke does state that man does not have the license to destroy himself or any other creature in his possession unless a legitimate purpose requires it. Locke emphasizes the ability and opportunity to own and profit from property as being necessary to be free. In On Liberty John Stuart Mill defines liberty in relation to three spheres; each successive sphere progressively encompasses and defines more elements relating to political society. The first sphere consists of the individuals inward domain of consciousness; demanding liberty of conscious in the most comprehensive sense; liberty of thought and feeling; absolute freedom of opinion and sentiment on all subjects, practical or speculative, scientific, moral, or theological. (Mill 13) The second sphere of Mill's definition encompasses the general freedoms which allow an individual to freely peruse a ...life to suit our own character; of doing as we like... (Mill 13). Mill also states that these freedoms must not be interfered with by fellow creatures, so long as what we do does not harm them... (Mill 13), no matter how odd, offensive and or immoral they may seem to others. The final sphere of Mill's definition of liberty is a combination of the first two. He states that ...the freedom to unite, for any purpose not involving harm to others: the persons combining being supposed to be of full age, and not forced and or deceived. (Mill 14) Locke and Mill's definitions of freedom must be qualified. Since the definitions they present in their respective literature are distinct from one another, when each philosopher refers to freedom or liberty they are not citing the same concept. This distinction is necessary when comparing their positions regarding the amount of freedom man should have in a political society. What one philosopher considers an overt an perverse abuse of liberty the other may consider the action completely legitimate and justifiable. John Locke believes that men should be virtually unrestricted and free in political society. Locke's rational for this liberal position lies in the twin foundation of man's naturally good inclinations and the specific and limited ends Locke believes political societies ought to have. According to Locke the only freedoms men should lose when entering into a political society are equality, liberty and executive power they has in the state of nature into the hands of society. (Locke 73) In Locke's ideal society this fails to limit or remove any freedom from the individual, it only removes the responsibility of protecting these freedoms from the individual and places it on the state. Style of Writing :: Education Writing Essays

Style of Writing In both of the books various elements of style are mentioned, William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White’s The Elements of Style and Joseph M. Williams’ Style Toward Clarity and Grace, clarity and concision are to be the most important. I think that in order for your reader to be able to enjoy and understand what they are reading, it has to be written clearly and concisely. I believed that everyone has his or her own style: whether the style be that of one’s hair, clothes, or writing. I always knew that having your own style did not mean that yours was the best or even decidedly correct. After I finished toiling through Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style and William’s Style Toward Clarity and Grace, I learned that there is a dress code, even for writing. Yes, you could have your own style, per sey, but you must follow the rules and guidelines necessary for good writing. The Elements of Style and Style are interesting because separately, they tell two different versions to the same story. In Strunk and White’s book, a mere ninety-five pages of instruction, tell you in brief and curt words the rules for writing clearly. This books intention was to be short, a sort of handbook for quick reference. In its introduction E.B White writes, â€Å"It was Will Strunk’s parvoum opus, his attempt to cut the vast tangle of English rhetoric down to size and write its rules and principles on the head of a pin† (Strunk and White xiii). This intention seems innocent but it is my belief that it leaves the reader wondering, without precise reason in mind what clear writing is. Joseph M. Williams’ book, on the other hand, elaborates in detail of te guidelines and principles for writing the English language clearly and concisely. Each of his systematic principles for good wiring are padded with an abundance of example and explanation. Joseph Williams’ acknowledges this in his preface: â€Å"you should understand this is not an afternoon read. We offer detailed ways to put into specific practice the clichà ©s of style ‘Be clear’ ‘Omit needless words’†¦ We suggest you read this book a short section at a time, and then look at your won writing the writing of others† (Williams xiii).

Even though the characters in their story share similar behaviors, shown by the dominant males promoting the operation to remove an unborn child, the females who value even though they face some difficulties of child rearing, as well as the two couples’ refusal to discuss conflicts with each other, both authors have different conclusions resulting from the sharp differences in setting, diction, and role of religion; Hemingway indicates love is bare and dull as well as presented by woman’s submissive role to the male’s prerogative while Wallace†¦show more content†¦The entire story is lengthened out between the time it takes Sheri to turn and Lane to look up at her, the perspective of the story seems to be taking place from the the inside of the pro tagonist’s head, who is recalling events that have recently happened so he is able to choose whether or not he is able to have the strength to accept Sheri’s decision. Hemingway s and Wallace’s geographical imagery symbolizes the couple’s reluctance to simply address their decisions on the abortions. In â€Å"Hills Like White Elephant† , Jig compares the mountain to â€Å"white elephants† which literally means a burden that is difficult to communicate and share; the â€Å"white elephants† figuratively represents the problem about the abortion (Hemingway 924). In â€Å"Good People†, Wallace implicitly states that Lane and Sheri’s pregnancy is â€Å"half hidden from their friends and the community†, while also acknowledging the dire situation of their relationship is like â€Å"downed tree† with â€Å"exposed roots† even during the beautiful season of spring â€Å"grass is () green† and the â₠¬Å"air suffused with honeysuckle and lilacs† (Wallace 927).
